The Mona de Pasqua, the most traditional sweet treat

Easter Monday falls on 22nd April this year and the city’s cake-shop windows will be filled with the traditional Easter cake known as the Mona de Pasqua, in all colours and sizes. On this day godparents traditionally give their godchildren this popular sweet treat that is unique to Catalonia.

There are many varieties of this cake and some are true works of art. The ones that are the biggest hit with little ones are decorated with TV personalities, characters from video games, film stars and footballers.

At Barcelona Shopping City we’re going to take a look at some of Barcelona’s cake shops where you can see and buy this delicious and original sweet delight.

Be Chocolat is a shop and chocolate-making atelier that provides a wonderful visitor experience as its products are made in front of its customers. The Mones at Be Chocolat are made from top-quality Belgian chocolate (the same used to make its chocolates) and this is what makes it truly distinctive. They can all be personalised while you wait, either with the name of your godchild or by filling an egg with a surprise.

Chocofiro is a cake shop founded more than 30 years ago and during the Easter period it makes kids’ dreams come true with its chocolate creations ready for Easter Monday. Real works of art, all made by hand, that delight young and old alike.

La Colmena is a true icon among the city’s cake shops and has been producing hand-made sweets and sweet treats since 1849. You’ll find a wide variety of Mones at this time of year, including cakes made from marzipan, butter, truffle, as well as Sachertortes, decorated with chocolate eggs, coloured feathers and Easter chicks. You’ll also find more spectacular ones consisting of figures made entirely from chocolate, usually on a theme that is popular with the kids.

Pastisseria Foix is the historic cake shop in the district of Sarrià and showcases the purest tradition that goes beyond the typical Mona. The chocolate ones are real works of art and portray the most varied selection of sculpted figures.

Pastisseria Mauri is a cake shop, chocolatiers and tearoom founded in 1929. It is a true Barcelona icon located right in the centre of the city’s Eixample district. Its selection of cakes and pastries and beautiful décor make it an absolute must for visitors.

Don’t miss this sweet tradition and come and choose your Mona de Pasqua!
